GREASE™ originated in Chicago and made its premiere at The Kingston Mines Theater in 1971 before making its New York premiere off-Broadway at the Eden Theatre on February 14, 1972. After 128 sold-out performances, the show made the transition to Broadway taking up residence at the Broadhurst Theatre on June 7, 1972. GREASE™ was nominated for seven Tony® Awards in its spectacular initial run. On November 21, 1972, the show moved to the Royale Theatre before making its final transfer on January 20, 1980 to the Majestic Theatre. It closed as the longest running show in Broadway history after playing 3,388 performances. In 1978, GREASE™became a hugely popular feature film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the lead roles. A Broadway revival opened on May 11, 1994 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre where it played 1,503 performances and earned three Tony® Award nominations. A London revival opened on July 15, 1993 at the Dominion Theatre and ran for 6 years on London’s West End and is still touring the UK today. A West End revival opened at the Piccadilly Theatre on August 8, 2007.
The film version of GREASE™ produced one of the best-selling soundtracks in history and is the highest-grossing movie musical of all time. The two Travolta/Newton-John duets, "You're The One That I Want" and "Summer Nights" were both #1 hits and appear on the UK’s All-Time Best-Selling Singles list. The song "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was nominated for an Academy Award® (1979) for Best Music - Original Song and the film's title song, “Grease” was a #1 smash hit single for singer Frankie Valli.
NBC premiered “Grease: You’re The One That I Want” on Sunday, January 7, 2007. The show featured thousands of hopefuls auditioning for the chance of a lifetime -- a starring role in a Broadway show. On-air judges Kathleen Marshall, producer David Ian and GREASE™ co-creator Jim Jacobs, narrowed down the field of contestants and then left the vote in America’s hands. Each week a new “Sandy” and “Danny” was voted off until America chose their favorite pair to star in the new Broadway production. Hosted by Billy Bush (“Access Hollywood”) and Denise van Outen, “Grease: You’re The One That I Want” was produced by BBC Worldwide Productions. MASTERWORKS BROADWAY TO RELEASE 2008 BROADWAY CAST RECORDING OF SOUTH PACIFIC
Sony BMG Masterworks proudly announces the upcoming release of the New Broadway Cast Recording of Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific. The CD will be available nationwide on May 27, 2008. This much-anticipated Lincoln Center Theater production of this treasured American musical directed by Bartlett Sher will have its Official Opening at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (150 West 65th Street) on Thursday, April 3. Previews began March 1. Produced by David Caddick and David Lai, the CD will be recorded on Monday, April 14 at New York’s Legacy Recording Studios (509 West 38th Street).
Based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. Set on a tropical island during World War II, the musical tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples -- US Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Navy Airman Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat -- and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific premiered at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre on April 7, 1949 and enjoyed a five-year run winning countless awards including nine Tony® Awards (among them, Best Musical) and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Considered by many to be the finest musical ever written, the score includes such classics as Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime, Bali Ha’i, There is Nothin’ Like A Dame and A Wonderful Guy.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific features a cast of 40 headed by Kelli O’Hara as Nellie Forbush and Paulo Szot as Emile de Becque, with Matthew Morrison (Lt. Joe Cable), Danny Burstein (Luther Billis) and Loretta Ables Sayre (Bloody Mary).
BETTY BUCKLEY RELEASES SECOND ALBUM ON PLAYBILL RECORDS -- “QUINETESSENCE” to be released February 5th
Playbill Records announces their second collaboration with Tony Award ® Winner and Broadway legend, Betty Buckley, entitled QUINTESSENCE, a stunning tribute to Buckley’s eighteen year working relationship with legendary jazz great, Kenny Werner. This album is the pair’s ninth album together and is a perfect bookend to the recently released Betty Buckley 1967, released this past October. Quintessence will be released on the same day that Buckley will return to New York’s famed Feinstein’s for a two and a half week engagement.
“1967” features a nineteen year old Buckley in her first ever studio recording. The resulting eleven tracks expose the young abandon and whimsical charisma of a girl who will one day become one of the Great White Way’s greatest talents. Conversely, “Quintessence”, oozes with the seasoned finesse of a musical virtuoso—a performance that travels the artistic landscape of one of the most distinguished and celebrated performers of today. Fans of Betty Buckley and Kenny Werner can expect a beautiful musical valentine.
The album opens with a smoky, jazz-infused version of the famous Sergio Mendes and Bergman’s collaboration, So Many Stars and concludes with an achingly “hushed” version of Get Here, the hit song made famous by Oleta Adams. In between is a magical mix of tracks that takes the dramatic range and theatrics of Buckley’s voice and infuses it with the jazz influence of her skillful quintet.
Ms. Buckley describes the musical choices on the album as "paintings with sound." In fact, she used paintings to illustrate what she envisioned for each song as she and Werner discussed the "feel" for each of the unique arrangements.
The year continues to be a landmark one for Buckley. She recently wrapped filming on the highly anticipated film from director M. Night Shyamalan entitled “The Happening”. She recently debuted at New York City’s Town Hall to a sold out crowd and will return to Feinstein’s for the forth time on February 5th and will play through February 23rd.

Tony Award Winner and Broadway legend, Betty Buckley, has been named the first female artist signed to Playbill Records, a join-venture partnership with SONY BMG Masterworks Broadway. Buckley’s first CD as a newly signed artist to Playbill is entitled Betty Buckley 1967 and will be released on October 16th, 2007. This will mark Playbill Records’ second studio-album release, following its successful, label-launching record, the self-titled Brian Stokes Mitchell. Buckley’s second album for the label, Quintessence, is slated to release on Valentine’s Day 2008.

Sondheim's inspiration for this musical was the painting "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat. The New Cast Recording features the most complete version of the score ever recorded, and for the first time includes the full libretto!
In an empty theatre, on a bare stage, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. the field's been narrowed down to just 17 dancers. For these men and women, this audition is the chance of a lifetime. It's what they've worked for - with every drop of sweat, every hour of training, every day of their lives. It's the one opportunity to do what they've always dreamed of. Not to be the star, but to get the job...to have the chance to dance and come through.
But before the final cut is made, the director, Zach, asks each of them to talk about themselves. He starts by asking their name, age, hometown and reason for being a dancer, but Zach wants more than just their résumés. He wants to know about their families, friends, lovers, ambitions and careers. One by one, they come forward. Some are shy or reluctant, while others are more than happy to reveal their innermost thoughts. From funny to heartbreaking, these 17 dancers share with us the stories of their lives. They put themselves on the line to get a job on the line. When they're done, so is the audition, and the final chorus line of 8 dancers is chosen.
A Chorus Line features some of the greatest Broadway show tunes including "What I Did for Love", "Nothing", "Dance: Ten; Looks: Three" and the show-stopping "One". This New Cast Recording features the most complete version of the score ever before recorded, with an extended version of the show's Montage and dialogue snippets. BETTY BUCKLEY RELEASES SECOND ALBUM ON PLAYBILL RECORDS -- “QUINETESSENCE” to be released February 5th
Tony Award Winner and Broadway legend, Betty Buckley, has been named the first female artist signed to Playbill Records, a join-venture partnership with SONY BMG Masterworks Broadway. Buckley’s first CD as a newly signed artist to Playbill is entitled Betty Buckley 1967 and will be released on October 16th, 2007. This will mark Playbill Records’ second studio-album release, following its successful, label-launching record, the self-titled Brian Stokes Mitchell. Buckley’s second album for the label, Quintessence, is slated to release on Valentine’s Day 2008.
