Indian filmmaker A R Rahman brought the sights and sounds of Bollywood to London and then to Broadway with this musical extravaganza, starring Raza Jeffrey and Preeya Kalidas as star-crossed lovers who have to overcome various difficulties, when the hero, an aspiring actor from a Bombay slum, falls in love with the heroine, engaged to a lawyer and the daughter of a well-known Bollywood filmmaker. With a book by Meera Syal and lyrics by Don Black, and produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show received its world premiere June 19, 2002 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London, where it ran for two years. Substantially revised, both in plot and musical content, it had a Broadway premiere on April 29, 2004 for a run of 284 performances.
Akaash, a young man from the slums of Bombay, dreams of becoming the next big Bollywood star. A rich lawyer and his fiancée, an aspiring documentary filmmaker, arrive in Akaash's slum to prevent its demolition, and Akaash soon falls in love with the fiancée, Priya. She happens to be the daughter of a famous Bollywood mogul, and a connection to the world that Akaash longs to enter. The plot thickens as Akaash comes up against the harsh realities of show business and fame, complicated by his obligations to his home, his family and friends, and his love for Priya.
