The uncontested champion of the 1948-49 season and a multiple Tony® winner, Kiss Me, Kate opened at the New Century Theatre on December 30, 1948. In a double backstage story loosely inspired by the well-known feuds of real-life married thespians Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the book by Bella and Samuel Spewack detailed the stormy relationship between an egotistical actor-director, played by Alfred Drake, and his narcissistic ex-wife, portrayed by Patricia Morison, during the rehearsals of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. With a dazzling, whimsical score by Cole Porter, the show became a major hit, playing 1,077 performances in its first run, and has been revived many times since.
First LP release: February 15, 1949
On the eve of the first anniversary of their divorce, Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi are rehearsing for the leading roles in Taming of the Shrew. Bill Calhoun, a member of the cast, has incurred a gambling debt and tells actress Lois Lane he has signed Fred’s name to an IOU.
As the play begins, Fred, as Petruchio, seeks a wife and finds a fascinating possibility in the shrewish Katherine, as played by real life ex-wife Lilli. In the meantime two thugs arrive and demand payment from Fred for Bill’s IOU. At first, Fred claims he has signed no such document, but when Lilli threatens to leave the show for Fred’s too realistic portrayals of the shrew tamer, he changes his mind. He talks the gunmen into donning costumes and escorting Lilli bodily through all the scenes for the remainder of the play’s engagement.
In the end, Fred tames the shrew, both on and off the stage, their real life romance is revived and the gunmen get a good lesson in Shakespeare.

Review
This was my first Broadway show. I was not quite six years old but still have some merories of it. This show was the beginning of my life long love affair with the theatre. I still have memories of Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison and that classic Cole Porter score. Still a great cast album.
