I take umbrage at all the negative comments directed at Bernadette Peters portrayal of Sally Durrant Plummer. She was a stupendous Sally. Her version of "Losing My Mind " is far superior to Victoria Clarks. Ms Clark is a very good actress, but Ms Peters brought something special to the role. Hey if Sondheim didn't see something in Bernadette to play Sally I bet he wouldn't have let her do it. Now it's time for her to tackle Phyllis. Now that would be something.

This cast album is a hidden gem. A lovely, underrated score and magnificent delivery of the songs by an extremely talented cast. I wonder if the short run might have been caused by critics who for some reason held a grudge against Walter Kerr. Stritch's delivery of "Who's Been Sitting in My Chair" is perfection!

This is mixed very differently from the original Broadway cast album so is worth a listen for its own sake.

It was Patrick Bedford, not Brian, who played Adams on the tour.

The funny thing about the Tony committee nominating Williams Daniels in the supporting or featured category (I think that supporting, not featured, was the term used that season) is that they'd never been consistent in applying the over-the-title rule. I think it's very likely that the committee chose to nominate Daniels in supporting thinking that they were doing him a favor — that he'd win easily in supporting, but would lose to Orbach if he were nominated in the leading actor category. And I do think he would have lost to Orbach who easily won that season's Variety Poll of Drama Critics Award in that category.
