A child of Broadway – her mother is a voice coach, her father a Broadway actor and singer – Laura Benanti has in the span of just ten years established herself as a veteran of the Great White Way. Fresh from high school in 1998, she joined the cast in the revival of The Sound of Music, working her way through various parts from postulant to ensemble to Maria herself in the course of months. In 2000, Benanti was nominated for a Tony® for her performance in the revue Swing! and garnered nominations for both a Tony® and a Drama Desk Award as Cinderella in the 2002 revival of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods. She has also appeared in revivals of Nine (with Antonio Banderas) and Gypsy. She earned a Tony® there for her portrayal of Louise.
Laura Benanti’s first appearance in an original Broadway musical came as Julia in The Wedding Singer in 2006.
