An amazing and timeless gift would be the Original Cast Recording of My Fair Lady. Incontestably one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time, My Fair Lady, set the standards for its perfect integration of the songs and the plot in a smooth amalgamation of music and drama. The work of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, who adapted George Bernard Shaw’s whimsical tale of Pygmalion to the musical stage, it starred a non-singing actor, Rex Harrison, another first, and Julie Andrews in her first major role on Broadway.
Another classic every Broadway fan should have in their collection is Broadway hit, Cabaret featuring Alan Cumming as the emcee. Where the original production of Cabaret was a big splash-dash affair, directed with a sure hand by Harold Prince, this revival of the John Kander-Fred Ebb musical, deftly staged by Sam Mendes, which debuted on March 19, 1998, more closely resembled a show Kurt Weill might have written. The more intimate relationship between the characters, and the Kit Kat Klub production numbers led by Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles, gave the musical a darker, seedier but no less effective aspect.
Continue the holiday cheer with albums like:
A delightfully impish tale set in Indiana in the 1940s, based on the 1983 film of the same name, A Christmas Story takes its inspiration from the writings of humorist Jean Shepherd and his story about 9-year-old Ralphie, whose only wish for Christmas is to get a Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle.
